Former US Open winner Andy Murray achieved a milestone with his 200th major win on Tuesday, overcoming the Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. This victory propelled Murray into the second round at New York. The Scot tackled the Frenchman’s bold play with steady precision, winning 69 per cent of the net points.

Murray, who won the hard-court Slam in 2012 after defeating Novak Djokovic, is now only the ninth man in history to clock 200 match wins at major tournaments. He will now seek to extract his 201st win against Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian clinched victory from the jaws of defeat to edge Alex Molcan 6-7(9), 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5, 7-6(11-9) in a gruelling four hours and 40 minutes long match.

The 36-year-old Murray’s success record also includes winning the Wimbledon title twice (2013, 2016), making it to finals five times at the Australian Open (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016), and playing the championship match at the Roland Garros in 2016.

Murray faced off the tenacious Moutet by saving two set points in the second set and gaining control. He executed the deciding break of the third set in the eighth game and held his serve on the fourth match point.

Murray will next go against Dimitrov, victor of a comeback match against Molcan, reaching the second round in New York for the fourth consecutive year. Dimitrov, who has played against Murray in the ATP Head-to-Head series with a 3-8 deficit, struck 81 winners against Molcan.

The second round will also see British player Cameron Norrie, who defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 32 minutes. A deep run at the hard-court major could boost Norrie’s odds of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.

British hopeful Jack Draper also scored a victory against Radu Albot with 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round at the US Open. Only time will reveal whether these outstanding players will further their winning streaks in upcoming matches.
