While speaking with Star Sports, Gavaskar lauded the wicket-keeping batter for scoring his eighth Test hundred in one of the most testing conditions in South Africa, while ranking his knock amongst the top-10 in Indian Test cricket’s history.
“Watching cricket for 50 years, I can surely Say this hundred by Rahul is in the Top 10 in the Indian history of Tests,” Gavaskar said.
When asked about how he feels about Gavaskar’s comments during a press conference after the end of the day’s play, Rahul reacted by saying that he is humbled after receiving such a huge compliment. Rahul scored 101 runs off 137 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and four maximums in Centurion.
“Firstly, I am very humbled if he has made that comment. It’s a pretty huge compliment to get. I think batting in the middle-order. What I have realized is that you can’t really plan your innings that much. When you walk in there, there is a situation in front of you. The game tells you what you need to do and how you need to play. I walk in with a very empty mindset when I bat in the middle-order, and then I react according to the situation. Today and yesterday, I knew i was going to bat with the tail, so I had to take my chances and I am glad it came off,” said Rahul.
He went on to say that he has enjoyed batting at the Centurion, while insisting that he’s lucky to score two hundreds at this venue. Rahul has now hit back-to-back tons at the Centurion, having scored 123 runs to guide India to the win in their Boxing Day Test against South Africa in 2021.
“I have quite enjoyed playing here. The wicket keeps reminding you that you need to focus hard, you are never really in. There will be times where you can score really fast, and there will be times where you can’t even score a run. I have really enjoyed the challenge. I am really lucky that I scored hundred, twice here,” Rahul added.
With this knock, Rahul became just the third Indian batter to score multiple centuries in South Africa. He joined the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (5) and Virat Kohli (2) in this elite list.
South Africa ended Day 2 at 256 for 5, leading India by 11 runs and will be looking to build on that crucial lead whee play resumes in Centurion on Day 3.
