Former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs hit out at South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma, calling him unfit and overweight. Bavuma limped off after picking up an injury while fielding against India on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test.

Dean Elgar, who is playing his final Test series before retiring from international cricket, took over the captaincy following Bavuma’s injury in the first session.
The incident occurred during the 20th over, after South Africa won the toss and opted to field first. During a chase to stop a shot from the Indian batter Virat Kohli, Bavuma injured himself, suffering a strain on his left hamstring.
Replying to a post on ‘X’, Gibbs tore into the South African skipper, calling him ‘unfit and overweight to play’.
“Ironic that the coach allows some players who are clearly unfit and overweight to play when he started off as proteas trainer in 2009,” Gibbs posted on ‘X’.
This incident forced Bavuma, who had previously played in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup against South Africa in India the previous month, to retire immediately from the field. Interestingly, he had been nursing a right hamstring injury during the last match.
Post injury, Bavuma was sent for medical evaluation to assess the severity of the strain. The diagnosis was revealed during the day’s commentary, confirming that Bavuma had suffered a strain in his left hamstring.
Kagiso Rabada was the star of the day for South Africa, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul against India, while becoming just the seventh South African to pick 500 wickets in international cricket.
His spell helped the hosts apply pressure on the number 1 Test side in the world. However, a gritty half-century from KL Rahul got India back in the contest as they ended Day 1 with 208 for 8 on the scoreboard.
