Former Wrestling Federation of India president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has said that he has nothing to do with the newly elected board getting suspended by the Sports Ministry. Speaking in a press conference on December 24, Sunday, the former WFI chief said that he did not want to court any controversy, but had nothing to do with the latest developments in the Indian wrestling world.
Wrestling Federation of India Suspension: Explained
Earlier on Sunday, the Sports Ministry banned the WFI for arbitrary actions. In a strongly worded statement, the ministry said that the newly elected board under the presidency of Sanjay Singh had broken rules and regulations. The ministry further alleged that the newly elected board was also under the control of the previous office bearers – who were suspended under the allegations of sexual harassment.
“I have worked 12 years for the wrestlers. Time will tell if I have done justice. I am completely retired from wrestling. I have cut ties with wrestling. Now decisions and talks with the government will be done by the elected people of the federation,” Brij Bhushan Singh said at a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday.
Earlier this year, wrestlers had protested against Brij Bhushan Singh alleging that he had harassed several young junior wrestlers. Brij Bhushan was sacked from his position and Sanjay Singh was elected as the new president.
Celebrated India wrestler Sakshee Malikkh quit the sport in an emotional outburst and later put up another scathing criticism against the WFI. Sakshee alleged that she had received calls from several young female wrestlers that the junior national championships were being held in Gonda – the stronghold of the former president.
Soon after this, the ministry suspended the newly elected body. Sources have told India Today that the Sanjay Singh-led WFI will be moving Delhi High Court against the order.
