Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has signed a three-year contract with County Cricket side Essex. This move comes just days after he played his farewell Test match against India at Newlands Cricket Stadium in Cape Town.
The 36-year-old called him on his impressive Test career, having amassed 5,347 runs in 86 matches. He made his Test debut for South Africa in 2012 and played his final game for the Proteas this year.
Speaking after joining Essex, Elgar said he’s thrilled to embark on a new chapter in his cricketing career, adding that he’s looking forward to joining the team soon. Elgar has previously had stints in the County Cricket with Somerset and Surrey.
“I’m thrilled to embark on this new chapter of my cricketing journey with Essex. The club has been pushing for honours in recent years and I’m eager to contribute to further success. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my previous experiences in county cricket and I’m really looking forward to joining up with the squad ahead of season,” said Elgar.
Essex head coach, Anthony McGrath heaped praise on Elgar, saying his talent and experience will undoubtedly strengthen their team ahead of the new season. Elgar joins Jordan Cox as the new signings for Essex ahead of the 2024 County season.
“Dean brings a wealth of talent and experience that will undoubtedly strengthen our squad for the 2024 season. He has had an outstanding career in Test cricket and has demonstrated to the world his desire to score runs at the highest level, right up until he retired,” said McGrath.
Elgar will be filing in the opening spot left vacant following the retirement for former England captain Alastair Cook.
Cook was a crucial part of Essex’s team, having scored over 4000 runs at an average of 41.62 over the course of five seasons in County Cricket, following his international retirement in 2018.
