Australia opening batter David Warner has revealed the toughest bowler he’s ever faced, while recalling the 2016/17 Test series against South Africa. Warner is set to retire from Test cricket following Australia’s third and final Test of their series against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 3.

Warner named former South Africa fast-bowler Dale Steyn as the toughest bowler he’s ever faced. Steyn ended his career as South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 439 scalps in 93 matches.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Warner named Steyn as the toughest bowler he’s faced while recalling an incident at the WACA. Steyn has the 10th-most wickets in the history of Test cricket.

“Without doubt it’s Dale Steyn. I go back to the WACA (the first Test of the 2016-17 home series against South Africa) when me and Shaun Marsh had to go out for an ugly 45-minute session. Shaun came down to me and said, ‘I can’t pull him so I don’t know how we’re going to go about facing him’. He put me on my backside and I think he broke his shoulder as well that game,” said Warner.

He went on to call Steyn a fierce competitor, adding that he never gave him an inch on the field. Steyn ended his international career with 439 Test wickets, 196 ODI wickets, and 64 wickets in T20Is.

“He’s a fierce competitor who swung the ball back into the left-hander, which is similar to Mitchell Starc swinging the ball back into the right-hander at pace. He was always a fiery customer who never gave you a smile and never gave you an inch or a sniff on the field,” Warner added.

All eyes will be on Warner as he walks out on his home ground to play his final Test match. Australia has already taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Pakistan.
