AUS vs PAK: Babar Azam’s erractic throw hands Australia free run in Perth Test

Babar Azam has looked shoddy in his fielding on the ongoing tour of Australia. On Thursday, December 14, the former Pakistan skipper handed the home team a ‘free run’ on Day 1 of the opening Test at the Perth Stadium.

In the first ball of the 64th over, Salman Agha bowled one from around the wicket and David Warner tried to use his feet to play a shot down the ground. But Warner missed the ball altogether and should have been dismissed stumped.

However, wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed failed to collect the ball properly. The ball deflected off Sarfaraz’s gloves into Babar’s hands. On realising that Warner was out of his crease, Babar tried to throw down the stumps at the striker’s end. But the ball ended up going into the outfield, after which Warner ran a bye.

Warner was batting on 141 runs off 181 balls when the incident happened. Australia went on to rack up a huge score of 346 for the loss of five wickets in 84 overs. Warner racked up 164 runs off 211 balls with 16 fours and four sixes.

This was not the first time that Babar conceded runs to the opposition through poor fielding. In the warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI, he helped Matthew Renshaw bring up his half-century with a ‘seven’. Renshaw ran three, after which Babar gave away four overthrows.

Babar needs to put his hands up with the bat as Australia look good to going past 400 in their first innings. Recently, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir backed Babar to be at his best after stepping down as the national skipper across all three formats of international cricket.
